What are the odds of <em>that<\/em>?<\/p>\n<h2>John Urschel teamed up with Gillette for the #ShieldMove campaign.<\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be a mathematician to calculate that If you don\u2019t send a video in (like John\u2019s below) via \u201cthe Twitter,\u201d the probability of \u00a0John, Trent Williams, and\u00a0Rodger Saffold\u00a0selecting you as the contest\u2019s winner is a cool\u00a0<em>zero<\/em>\u00a0percent, a stat we verified in the interview below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7cG79JgDQ3I?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Loved your sensual, yet non-sensual dance move. Was that from real life?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Urschel: Oh, that\u2019s a <em>legit<\/em>\u00a0dance move \u2013 know that! I have moves. I took that one from the vault.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s the probability of success if you use that move on a hot babe on the dance floor?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nJohn Urschel: I\u2019ve calculated that it is 110%. Let it be known.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>60% of the time it works, every time?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nJohn Urschel: Ha ha ha! Exactly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John, would you refer to yourself as a \u201ccalculating\u201d guy?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nJohn Urschel: Yes, yes. I think I would.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are you tired of people calling you the \u201cMathlete?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nJohn Urschel: If you want to dub me that, feel free to rock it. I\u2019ll take it.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Do people\u00a0<em>actually<\/em>\u00a0call you that? Like, \u201cHey look, it\u2019s the Mathlete!\u201d In place of John?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It has happened on occasion. But I answer to both so it is OK.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the most creative smack talk you\u2019ve heard, a correlation if you will, comparing your skill at high-level math to your on-field, physical prowess?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Urschel: OK, so I played college ball with this guy named Jared Odrick. He\u2019s a defensive tackle\/defensive end, he\u2019s with the Jaguars now, used to be with the Dolphins. Not this past season but the season before, we were playing Miami. And I\u2019m lined up on offense, and he\u2019s lined up in his stance on defense, and he is asking me math questions. Like, \u201cWhat\u2019s 2 x 2?\u201d Things like that to try to get me off my game.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did they get progressively more difficult? Because even I could handle that one.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, there was a spectrum, so he just tried to entice me with that. That\u2019s where the true trickery came in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve always struggled with story problems.<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nYeah, yeah. Those are tough (dry as the sun).<\/p>\n<p><strong>You wrote a paper called \u201cA Cascadic Multigrid Algorithm for Computing the Fiedler Vector of Graph Laplacians.\u201d What does that even mean?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve been doing a lot of different math lately. But that one has a distant urkel method to compute this quantity which gives good approximation in non-clustering, of graphs. Amongst other things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I bet! So how would you practically apply that; what would you use that in? What endeavor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you have say, large data sets, high-dimensional data, trying to recognize patterns in the data, trying to break the data down. You can actually use it to project high-dimensional data into a lower dimensional sub state, and then you can kind of do some things with it there. It\u2019s much easier to work with.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are any of the Bengals even smart enough to talk trash to you about math?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nJohn Urschel: You know, I like a lot of players on the Bengals. I\u2019ve got a lot of respect for a lot of them.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Probability wise, what were the odds you\u2019d make it to the NFL, and, become a starter in your first year after being a 5th round pick?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I mean, these things happen but not the highest probability. But I take pride in beating the odds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s one thing that\u2019s happened that you couldn\u2019t have predicted about your NFL experience so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I could not have predicted that I would\u2019ve started in a playoff game in my rookie year. That was pretty cool. Two playoff games, actually.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s the probability of aliens existing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2>John Urschel: You mean, the probability of life on another planet?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m no expert but considering that on our planet there existed conditions that were conducive to life and given the large amount of planets, Id say that the probability plus the sample size, I\u2019d say it isn\u2019t out of the question.<\/p>\n<p><em>To celebrate these unsung protectors of the gridiron, Gillette is finally giving them the chance to dance \u2013 literally \u2013 by showcasing their signature protection-inspired #ShieldMove dance.
