{"id":951,"date":"2013-08-17T00:27:40","date_gmt":"2013-08-17T05:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pauleide.com\/?p=951"},"modified":"2025-08-04T11:29:49","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T16:29:49","slug":"atmosphere-and-queens-of-the-stone-age-at-stir-concert-cove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/atmosphere-and-queens-of-the-stone-age-at-stir-concert-cove\/","title":{"rendered":"Atmosphere and Queens of the Stone Age ROCK MY SHIT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/josh-homme-stir-omaha-ne-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4596 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/josh-homme-stir-omaha-ne-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4596 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It was Sunday night and I was less than an hour from seeing Queens of the Stone Age.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIs this going to be like seeing The Four Tops or The Drifters at the county fair, with only one remaining member, but technically still the Four Tops or The Drifters?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I was nervous inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the concert, I engaged my friend and musical mentor on a phone call, the man who got me into Queens in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to several lineup changes since their creation, I told him I wasn\u2019t as excited as I should\u2019ve been to see them for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He laughed and said, \u201cIt\u2019s still Queens, dude.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And by God, was he right. It <em>is<\/em> still Queens, <i>dude<\/i>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If I discovered a magical lamp with a hot genie (built like Barbara Eden) who asked what two acts I\u2019d like to see on successive days that I\u2019d never seen before yet loved for years, in perfect 70 degree weather, less than 10 miles from my home <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">round trip<\/i>, I would pick Atmosphere and Queens of the Stone Age on reflex alone, without even thinking, like a musical version of Pavlov\u2019s Dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent Saturday night at the Kicking Up Dust Tour with Slightly Stoopid, Atmosphere and The Grouch and Eligh and&nbsp;I wrapped up my weekend on Sunday night with Queens of the Stone Age and British newcomers Leo Gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I didn\u2019t even need a magical lamp. Or a feeder bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday night during my initial stroll from my car to Will Call to grab my tickets, I walked past none other than Anthony Davis, AKA \u201cAnt,\u201d DJ\/producer extraordinaire of Atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I introduced myself and briefly thanked him for coming to Stir as part of the tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my haste to get tickets and not wanting to be a complete fanboy, I neglected to get my picture taken with him, and we both moved on with our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a nagging thought for the rest of the evening (cue Homer\u2019s \u201cD\u2019oh!\u201d sound bite).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent hip-hop artists The Grouch and Eligh opened the concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former members of Bay Area hip-hop group Living Legends brought a ton of energy and set the tone of the entire show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/eligh-the-grouch-stir-council-bluffs-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4597 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/eligh-the-grouch-stir-council-bluffs-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4597 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between the end of their set and the beginning of Atmosphere\u2019s set, I was hanging out around the merch tent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To my right stood The Grouch, still sweating from being fresh off the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMan, I can\u2019t believe the summer is basically over already,\u201d said The Grouch, when I asked him how the tour was going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe go to Maui for a show in a couple of weeks and that\u2019s pretty much it. It\u2019s been fast, man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/the-grouch-hip-hop-paul-eide.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4599 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/the-grouch-hip-hop-paul-eide.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4599 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the minute Atmosphere came onto the stage, the crowd\u2019s level of excitement surged about 10 notches, and Slug matched their energy while Ant laid low in the background, his customary position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slug\u2019s performance solidified him as \u201cYour favorite rapper\u2019s favorite rapper,\u201d because from a technical rapping standpoint, he dominated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was totally invested in every song and engaged the crowd <i>between<\/i> every song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sluggo is a smart ass and he really gave the audience a fun glimpse into his personality throughout his time on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slug-atmosphere-hip-hop-omaha-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4600 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slug-atmosphere-hip-hop-omaha-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4600 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Atmosphere played a great set list, mixing songs from <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Lucy Ford<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">God Loves Ugly<\/i> with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">When Life Gives You Lemons<\/i> and <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">The Family Sign<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After performing \u201cLove Life,\u201d Slug exclaimed, \u201cThanks for letting us play the old shit. Even though it\u2019s older than some of you in the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the \u201cold shit\u201d also included \u201cScapegoat,\u201d \u201cWoman with the Tattooed Hands\u201d and \u201cGod\u2019s Bathroom Floor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slightly Stoopid may have been the headliner, but Atmosphere is who everyone came to see.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slug-of-atmosphere-hip-hop-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4601 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slug-of-atmosphere-hip-hop-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4601 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Speaking of the band from San Diego, Slightly Stoopid was good, but to me it all sounds like Sublime lite, which is certainly less filling and tastes a little flat, compared to the diesel version of growing up on Sublime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">But I did get some killer shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slightly-stoopid-omaha-ne-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4602 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/slightly-stoopid-omaha-ne-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4602 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Slightly Stoopid churned through their hit \u201c2 A.M.,\u201d I made my way up the grassy knoll of the concert venue and took a seat to observe from afar and compare sound quality on the outer edge of the Concert Cove.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Really, though, my express purpose was to take a final survey of the grounds to locate Ant and get a picture, as he is known to meander through the crowd at venues after his set, completely inconspicuous to the casual observer\/non Atmosphere head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As I got up to walk out, there was Ant, standing off to the side, chilling out. I approached and told Ant how much I loved his work.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThank you, Paul. I appreciate you going out of your way to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked Ant how it felt to be the most slept-on producer in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s life, Paul. That\u2019s just how it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And how had Atmosphere ended up at Stir Concert Cove?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe venue is great. We took one look at it and thought it would be perfect.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, I nerded out and got a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ant-of-atmosphere-paul-eide-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4603 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/ant-of-atmosphere-paul-eide-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4603 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then, I was out of there &#8212; in my driveway by 9:45 and in bed by 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most pleasant surprise of all the music I heard over two days was the opener for QOTSA, a band called Leo Gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Billed as \u201ca three-piece band from London, surging with a mix of blues, soul and a whole lotta rock &amp; roll,\u201d they took the show on short notice and had only been in the US for three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lead vocalist\/guitarist Tommy Smith was still trying to soak it all in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe just can\u2019t even believe we\u2019re here. We\u2019ve been listening to Queens since we were this big,\u201d said Smith as he gestured towards his knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just incredible for us; just a huge moment.\u201d Smith was a cool guy, totally authentic. And he has <i>fantastic<\/i> hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/leo-gun-rock-and-roll-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4604 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/leo-gun-rock-and-roll-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4604 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was all just a prelude to Queens of the Stone Age, though, as they came out and blasted our earholes with \u201cMillionaire\u201d right off the bat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Queens was incredibly tight and clean; there were no wasted moments, or a wasted note for the nearly two hour set. Everything was with purpose.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With Queens&#8217; entire presentation and stage presence, you forget that they&#8217;re just a band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s like they are some kind of movement rather than several humans playing instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/queens-of-the-stone-age-omaha-ne-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4605 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i80sportsblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/queens-of-the-stone-age-omaha-ne-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4605 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large video board behind the band amplified this effect as it interchanged stylized images of the desert, flocks of crows and a setting sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On their face, those things don\u2019t sound cool. But when you\u2019re being assaulted with \u201cGo With The Flow\u201d at the same time, everything takes on more significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>QOTSA played songs from their last four studio albums, excluding their self-titled first album and their second album, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Rated R<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It became apparent pretty early on that it was a conscious decision to progress in a different musical direction from the first two albums, and former bassist Nick Oliveri, and the accompanying sounds his presence generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The thing that amazed me about both Atmosphere and Queens was the veracity of each performance, even when playing material that was 10-plus years old.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember how you felt the first time you heard \u201cGod\u2019s Bathroom Floor\u201d or \u201cFirst It Giveth\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You still enjoy both songs, but now that you\u2019ve been listening for a period of years, it doesn\u2019t grab you like it used to. Imagine if you had to perform those songs night after night. To the credit of both acts, neither missed a beat or lacked in any intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both shows were great in no small part to the venue.
